Reem K. Arafa, Ph.D., is a Professor of Biomedical Sciences at Zewail City of Science and Technology with over 27 years of experience in pharmaceutical and organic medicinal chemistry. She has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals and contributed to 7 book chapters focusing on drug discovery for cancer and Alzheimer's disease. An accomplished inventor, she holds 4 US patents for novel antiparasitic agents and has 2 additional patent applications pending for treatments related to neurodegeneration and oncology. Dr. Arafa has also demonstrated significant academic leadership roles in various universities, supervised over 25 Ph.D. and M.Sc. candidates and served as the Director of the Drug Design and Discovery Lab since 2015.
Professor Arafa’s academic background is rooted in pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry, beginning with her B.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Cairo University in 1997, where she graduated with Honors. She continued her education at Cairo University, earning an M.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 2001. Dr. Arafa then moved to Georgia State University in the United States, where she completed her Ph.D. in Organic Medicinal Chemistry in May 2004. Following her doctoral studies, she served as a sabbatical post-doctorate fellow and research associate at Georgia State University before returning to her academic roles in Egypt attending various universities. She also served as a visiting professor in Le mans University, France.
